VeganMoFo: Veggin' Out for Animals & the Economy

In recognition of World Vegetarian Day (Oct. 1) and World Farm Animals Day (Oct. 2), Society of PEACE encouraged all Texans to eat out and show our support of local vegan/vegetarian/veg-friendly restaurants. Additionally, it's probably not a bad idea to get out and support our struggling economy right now. So even if you're not located in the lone star state, get out there and support your favorite veg restaurant!

I picked up take-out from Field of Greens, a mostly vegetarian casual restaurant that can veganize almost everything on their menu. Even though I tried to encourage myself to try something new, I couldn't help getting my tried and true favorite.... the california club. Composed of toasted whole wheat bread, soy ham & tempeh, avocado, and veganaise with well-seasoned fries on the side.
And even though John isn't home yet from work, I picked him up an Eden Burger. Soy ham (subbed for soy chicken since it has whey in it), barbeque sauce, shitake mushrooms, and basil crusted bean curd on a whole wheat bun.
I don't often get dessert at Field of Greens (since I usually make my own!), but to celebrate Veggin' Out days, I ordered the chocolate cake. And after asking which chocolate dessert was better, the cake or the tofu pie, the FOG staff added in a small sample piece of pie! I think my vote (as well as the staff member I talked with) goes to the cake.
Speaking of voting, I must get back to flipping between the vice-presidential debates and Project Runway. More mofo tomorrow!

I'd say both the pie AND the cake look fantastic! Must go drop into the debate myself. . .ours in Canada is going on simultaneously! (How to choose, how to choose. . ?)

I want fries...

Getting a sample of the pie is pretty awesome. Even if it wasn't as good as the cake.

My only problem with FOG is that most of the food on the menu wouldn't be very hard to make at home, and would be a lot cheaper, too.

I've become pretty much anti-going-out-to-eat.

I did find out that I L-O-V-E Fadi's though. I've been dreaming about their cabbage salad. Soooo good.

I may be anti-going-out-to-eat-except-for-Fadi's.

Project Runway - Yeah Baby! I have to watch the episode. It is taped. Supporting restaurants that serve vegan food is super and so yummy!

It is nice to be able to go out and have a nice vegan meal prepared for you. There are limited choices in my neck of the woods. Everything is about 20 miles one way. We do have a Chinese reasaurant that will veganize a dish or two for me, but that is about it. We used to have a Greek restaurant and it was great, but they have now changed their recipes and have dairy in their falafel, pita, and hummus. Yes, hummus. Dumb!! How I dream of a vegan restaurant opening up near me!

I miss being able to go to a restaurant and order a sandwich or a burger. Really... I have some options here (and use them quite often), but sometimes it's the little things what we miss...

I think my favorite vegan food is chocolate mousse pie. I just wish there were a restaurant around here that served it-- I' eat out EVERY day!

What'd you think of the debate?

We're having an *Eat Local Week* here with restaurants featuring local grown foods. Your FOG looks like a nice takeout place - with great desserts!

That club looks so good. It's making me hungry for lunch, which will probably be leftovers, not bad, but not a yummy sandwich made by somebody else ;-).

good idea about getting out and supporting local veg restaurants. I'm going to Pizza Pi, a vegan pizza place in Seattle this saturday.

You have enough cake to share with me, you realize....

That is one heck of a burger you got there! I wish Field of Greens was here! I do have the Field of Greens cookbook (though I'm not sure if it's related to the restaurant).

Looks tasty! Sounds like a great place too. Did you enjoy the debate? I watched it with my dad, but we didn't agree on much. :)

Both of those sandwiches look delicious! And how kind to let you sample both desserts- good thing you can never have too much chocolate.

We went to FOG on Saturday and I got the California club! Good stuff! Sergio loves the fajitas. Too bad they can't get vegan chicken.
