Hole in One

Sometimes I bake when I'm bored. With John out of town, I decided to make something I've been wanting to try for awhile now, donuts! Since I don't own a donut pan (yet) I opted to make donut holes using the recipe from Vegan YumYum.

As you can see they turned out a bit more like donut muffins than donut holes. I filled the mini-muffin cups a bit too high I guess. Oh well. I made two different frostings. One was a mixture of powdered sugar, soy milk, agave nectar (as Melisser suggested), and pink food coloring. The other was just melted semi-sweet chocolate chips, dotted with the leftover pink icing.

They were a hit. I brought them to work for an all day meeting and I came home with nothing. I think my boss ate four or five... too bad my baking won't get me a raise!

Just an aside, I purchased two things in the grocery store that I wanted to share... first is Whole Foods new (at least here in Houston) vegan sugar. This made me happy to see on the shelves with the word "vegan" written boldly across the front. I forgot to check and see if it's cheaper than the Florida Crystals, I'll report back on that.

**Update** WF vegan sugar is indeed cheaper than the Florida Crystals counterpart. $1/lb vs. $1.90/lb.

Also, I bought some sprinkles for decoration. I am always questioning whether sprinkles are vegan with the strange color+number (i.e. red 40) combinations that are listed. So I was happy to see that these sprinkles are vegan (bottom left, not as big an advertisement as the sugar). My only disappointment is the amount of sprinkles that come in each box. Only two small packets of sprinkles. Does anyone know of good vegan sprinkles that you can get online?

Okay, I'm starving. I'm on a fast until 10:15am to do a health screening at work. Should be interesting though, I always like to find out where I stand as far as cholesterol, body fat, etc. Can't wait until lunch though!

Wow, I missed all kinds of post lasts week! The donuts look awesome and they are actually on my "to try" list some day.

Pumpkin is my fav and I need to start baking with pumpkin soon. That is a cool pic with the gourds.

Yay pizza, especially homemade. I've got some sourdough feeding in the kitchen today. Tonight I am planning to make some pizza crusts.

even if you meant to make donut HOLES, I think that the little donut-muffins are even MORE adorable!!! and wow, how fun to see "vegan" plastered on the Whole Foods sugar package - yay! :0) As for vegan sprinkles, I could have SWORN that VeganEssentials.com sold some... I just checked their site, and they don't seem to be selling them anymore. Sorry!

Good luck with your health screening - be sure to have a scrumptious lunch afterwards!! :0)

I made those donut holes recently too and they were yummy - I think Matt ate about 75% of the entire batch in one night. :-)

Oh yum! Do you have all natural food coloring too? I want to bake some yummies but don't know if they sell it.

How cool that Whole Foods is selling vegan sugar now! Must look for it next time I come across a WFM. I'm glad you found the natural sprinkles- I think those are the only "healthy" sprinkles I've come across- I wonder if vegan bakeries have a wholesale bulk supplier of sprinkles? That might be something to look in to.

Speaking of natural, I've always wanted to experiment with beet powder for pink/red, and wonder how "beety" it tastes. I also saw a recipe Alton Brown (!) gave for all-natural green icing that's just avocado beaten with powdered sugar. How cool does that sound? Must try soon.

I hope your health test went well! And you got to eat something good afterwards!

Yummie. I bet John will be sad. Except, you said he likes to be healthy so maybe he'll be glad you made donuts while he was away.

I bet you're super healthy. You look so tiny in your picture! :-)

Those turned out great! I made cake recently that I thought tasted like donuts, so who cares what they look like? I love those sprinkles, but I don't really know of another brand. And I can't believe WF has a cheaper product than someone else!

Too damn cute those little donut holes!

And I am definitely going to WF for that vegan cane. Hope the screening goes well and you can tell all those vegan doubters how extra healthy you are!

Adorable little baked muffin/donuts, and what awesome news about the sugar! It's such a relief to have more reliable sources out there!

I see someone already recommended India Tree's Natures Colors. They rock! Whole Foods carries them and you can also get them online.

We adore them!

Cheers!

WFM so-called "vegan sugar" is not technically vegan. Their sugar is bleached (which is not vegan) AND processed through a charcoal filter (which uses crushed animal bone, the same as traditional sugar). While the finished product does not possess any animal ingredients, per se, it is manufactured with means that continue the exploitation of animals. Sugar alternatives are available that are vegan...look for the certified vegan label, not the WFM assurance.
