VeganMoFo: Daring Bakers Challenge - Pizza Dough

With all the time I've been spending mofoing and traveling lately, this month's Daring Bakers challenge really snuck up on me! Before I knew it, I had to crank up my oven and get to baking (as in last night). Luckily, this month's challenge was vegan as written and allowed for plenty of variation: pizza!
But there was one twist... we had to photograph ourselves tossing the dough. Even though I knew my lack of hand-eye coordination would make this quite a challenge, I gave it a whirl. Surprisingly enough, I managed to get the dough maybe 8 inches or so away from my hands and only dropped it once. I convinced John to give it a try and he was a natural... must be all that Italian heritage in his blood! But we both found that the dough was thinning on the inside and still thick on the outside no matter how hard we tried, so I eventually resorted to the rolling pin.
I kept the toppings quite simple; a light tomato sauce, homemade basil pesto, mushrooms, green bell peppers, green onions, and a sprinkling of nutritional yeast. It was the perfect thin crust pizza.
And I still have two more pizza crusts in the freezer so I can continue to perfect my pizza tossing skills !

EXTRA kudos to you for finding time to participate (and succeed in) this month's DBC, due to your busyness!! You ROCKED it, and I love the photo of you tossing the dough :0)

I too had the same trouble. I even ripped a hole in the middle when I tossed it. Needless to say I too use a rolling pin, and forgot to take a picture of my baked pizza. Oh my! You and John did an amazing job with your tossing and the pizza looks so good!

tossing dough seems like so much fun! i have never done it for fear that i will surely drop the whole thing on the floor and that would not be good eats!

Great job! I hit the camera twice with my dough tossing and had to stop before I broke something!

It looks like you guys are really enjoying tossing that pizza there! If I tried that I would end up with a big pizza dough hat on my head! :P
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! :)

Yea, I've never had much success with throwing the dough. I've tried it lots of times, but mostly just for the fun of it!

John really does look like a pro! Your toss looks good too, but you know... The pizza looks yummy, very Italian - red white & green.

Excellent action shots! I wanted to get some too, but then I realized that doughy, floury hands + camera = not so good. That's what I get for working alone, I suppose!

Haha Amanda, I love the dough-flipping photos! Forget opening up a bakery; how about a pizza parlor?

Kudos to both of you, love seeing those action on tossing the dough. Well done.
Bell pepper and mushroom topping? what not to like? Love it.

How neat! I'm sure the dough would have fallen right on my head if I'd tried that!

BTW, I know I've seen them before, but those plates are JUST TOO CUTE!

You look very sweet in that photo :-). And your pizza looks as good as you!

We were just talking about making pizza! We'll have to try to make the dough from scratch this time! And we'll have to try the basil pesto too! Looks good!

Tossing pizza dough- how fun! I've attempted but it only resulted in a mess, so how awesome for you and John to do it successfully. And your pizza toppings sound lovely- simple and delicious.

I love the action photos! Congrats on tackling the dough tossing technique - I resorted to stretching my dough out by hand in the end.

Gorgeous! Like I said to Hannah over at Bittersweet, I wish we could swap slices! :) I couldn't photograph myself tossing dough because I was alone but the pics of you and John doing it at great.

Anyway, your pizza looks quite tasty. This was a fun and yummy challenge!

Great tossing! Wasn't this a great challenge! It was nice to have 2 vegan challenges in a row, not to mention 2 savory challenges. Your pizza sounds so good.
